UNION STORY

What began as The United Boda-Boda Riders Cooperative Union, a bold national movement to unify and professionalize Uganda’s fragmented boda-boda sector has transformed into something far greater, in less than 18 months.

Building on the proven success of the Boda Boda Co-operative Union model, which has demonstrated that organizing transport workers into a structured, technology-enabled ecosystem can deliver real economic value at scale, the UNION TRANSPORT ALLIANCE was formalized in March 2026.

Simply known as ‘UNION’.

At its core, UNION is an umbrella body integrating boda bodas, taxis, buses, and truck operators onto one unified platform designed as a commercial platform (“supermarket”) for already existing products such as; Union ride hailing app, bike loans, Union water, smartphones, Union Data Bundle, and Union Oil, as well as future products such as; Union matatus (taxis), Union buses, Union trucks, tyres, spare parts, electric cars, backpacks, laptops, scholastic materials and many more.This positions it as the largest organized economic vehicle in Uganda. 

At the heart of our work is empowering over 10 million hardworking transporters and their families to not only grow, earn more, and plan for the future but to also shape a stronger, more organized transport sector.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY MILESTONES

21st January 2025

As part of the National Boda Boda Stage Development Initiative, UNION was officially launched at the Kampala Serena Hotel under the theme:
“Empowering Boda Boda Riders for Growth.”
A new chapter for Uganda’s transport sector had begun

17th February 2025

UNION took a digital leap forward with the launch of the Union App, giving riders nationwide access to services that boost their earnings, and convenience for passengers.

At the same time, Union Centres were established across all sub-regions bringing coordination and support closer to riders. Currently, Union has 135 centres countrywide.

7th May 2025

History was made in Gulu City, as over 1,200 boda-boda leaders from 135 districts gathered for a landmark leadership retreat, graced by Gen. (Rtd) Salim Saleh.

5th June 2025

UNION unveiled its asset financing products at Garden City, Kampala empowering members through bike ownership, smartphones, and access to land.

27th July 2025

UNION ignited a powerful youth empowerment drive in Kawempe Division equipping young riders with bodabodas, financial tools, and a pathway to home ownership to fight unemployment and poverty.

19th August 2025

UNION revolutionized Uganda’s transport sector with the rollout of 4,000 brand-new Spiro electric bikes across the Kampala Metropolitan Area in an effort to improve livelihoods and accelerate Uganda’s transition to clean, affordable mobility.

9th September 2025

Boda-boda and taxi operators formed a historic alliance, uniting under Union to reshape the transport sector through improved safety, professionalism, and service delivery nationwide.

14th September 2025

Union organised the biggest transport sector celebration.

H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, marking his 81st birthday, officiated the first-ever Boda Union Festival and Expo at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds — a national celebration of the boda economy.

3rd November 2025

UNION crossed yet another milestone:

10,000 Union E-Bike Riders strong.
